Miracle on Monroe (Cast: 7m, 6f)

Inspired by Donalyn Elder’s Mythology of Grass, the stories in Greek Mythology as well as the Christian bible, Miracle on Monroe tells the story of Sparta, New York - a small, abandoned, industrial town whose citizens are in need of a savior. Drug dealers, addicts, gang members and the church all step to the plate.

A woman’s night gets even worse when she stumbles into a diner to escape a storm and finds herself enslaved there as a worker. Dinah Washington’s voice, inspiration and songs color this dark world located somewhere in between heaven and hell - where all the female roles are played by men.

Ballad of Sad Young Men (Cast: 2m, 1f)

Joe, a young soldier, revisits old haunts on the eve of his re-assignment to duty in war. His two childhood friends, who are entangled in their own personal issues at home, do the best they can to send him off with purpose. Based on the song, of the same name, by Fran Landesman, as sung by Roberta Flack.

An HIV +, grad student in cosmology is forced into single fatherhood while being consumed by the search for his lost love. This cautionary tale is about the things we lose, find and pass on.

Written with composers Nick DePinna and Hitomi Oba, this jazz operetta uses Walter de la Mare’s poetry to tell the story of a wandering soldier as he tries to fulfill a mysterious mission while holding onto the women and friends he loves.
